Our genetic structure, our right brain, left brain mix and match magic, our tribal identities that have morphed into nations and run away terrorist clans, "all this and so much more" define the glory and shame of what we have become.
Our reactivity to danger has made our evolution possible. Our ability to create it grows more and more awesome with each day. When the "all clear" signal has been destroyed, the safety of quick reflexes becomes the helplessness of spastic gesturing.
The current cultural response, a response world wide, East and West, North and South, is a rushing to seek safety behind the barricade of Belief. It makes no difference what that Belief is called. It may be known as Religious, or Economic, or Political, or Psychological. It may coalesce in a few Fundamentalist principals, it may blend one with the other. It makes no difference. The sense of safety is the same as what we felt when we snuggled into bed with our soft swollen blanket and stuffed teddy bear. And just as effective.
Using some techniques for stepping back from our automatic responses, will give us the opportunity to examine this following notion that I find very useful:
I know what I know from what I learned in books and from people. The combination of my life events have located themselves in my thinking process. Those experiential "learnings" have produced "what i Believe"
But If I had been raised in another part of this country, or in another country in the world, the books and people would have been in different combinations from those that I experienced. Thus, what I believe would be different.
What that reality means for me is this: I must hold lightly what I believe to be true; a too firm grip will twist it beyond its usefulness.
