AS YOU TRAVEL THROUGH LIFE BROTHER, WHATEVER MAY BE YOU GOAL.
KEEP YOUR EYE UPON THE DOUGHNUT, AND NOT UPON THE HOLE.
Through the ordinary bumps of a safe middle class life in this country, I have managed to let that advice guide me much of the time. After all, we do know, that without a hole, there is no doughnut; without negative space, there is no work of art, without moments of silence, there is no music.
But, perhaps the combination of age and experience has opened up doors of perception and feeling that were partially closed by the demands of daily life at an earlier age. The reality I live in now, much of the time, is one of a clumsy simultaneity: my personal and family live is wonderful and full of joy; the world we all live in is one of pain and sorrow. That experience is almost always with me.
I am certain that complex combination of realities is true for many of us, much of the time.
